Introduction

Health and Safety in Exploration 1 is one of a series of courses developed from e3 Plus: A Framework for Responsible Exploration, a guideline developed by the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) to help exploration companies continuously improve their social, environmental and health and safety performance and to comprehensively integrate these three aspects into all of their exploration programs around the world. e3 Plus provides the means for members to reduce social and environmental risk to their projects, to benefit local communities and to enable companies to become world leaders in corporate social responsibility performance (CSR).

The intended audience for e3 Plus includes: the exploration sector, local communities, government organizations, non-governmental organizations, civil society, academia or any interested party.

Health and Safety in Exploration 1 covers the following principal topics:

• Part 1: General Safety
• Part 2: Emergencies and Personal Safety
• Part 3: Field Equipment

Course Content

This course is presented as 11 study sessions, each of approximately 60 minutes study duration, plus three interactive reviews that confirm the viewer's achievement of learning objectives. The total duration of the course is approximately 12 hours. 

Learning Outcomes

1. Discuss the general principles of a health and safety program as applied to exploration, and the need for training, audits, meetings, risk assessment and incident reporting.
2. Discuss the need for an Emergency Management Plan and Emergency Response Plans and the principles behind their development.
3. Recognize the ways of protecting one's body from the risks and hazards of working in the exploration industry and the need for personal protective equipment.
4. Recognize the safe use of implements and equipment that are commonly used for field work in exploration.
